Growth in Numbers
⬆ Here’s Brian measuring up, with some panda encouragement.
A Dad's Perspective
My son Brian has always been the athletic type—loves basketball, quick on his feet, great instincts on the court. At 12, he was about 5'5 (165cm), already taller than most of his classmates. So honestly, we weren’t too worried about his height. We figured the puberty growth spurt would take care of the rest.
But after the New Year, something felt off. He had clearly hit puberty—voice changes, appetite spikes—but his height wasn’t jumping the way we expected. It wasn’t like he stopped growing, just... slower than it should’ve been during such a critical window.
We decided to run a full check-up: bone age scan, hormone panel, the works. That’s when things got real. His bone age came back over 14, even though he was just 12 years and a few months. His predicted adult height? Around 5'8 (172–173cm). Not terrible by any means—but definitely short of what we’d hoped. I’m 5'10 (177cm), and my wife is 5'3 (161cm). We always pictured him breaking six feet, especially with his build and love for sports.
⬆ Brian’s bone age was already over 14, even though he was just 12.
His growth hormone and IGF-1 levels came back totally normal. Which was a relief—but also meant we didn’t have a clear “fix.” There was no need for hormone injections, but we also knew we were working against time. His growth plates were aging faster than we expected, and this might be the last real shot to help him reach his full potential.
Looking back, I do wonder if we played a part. When Brian was younger—around 5 to 7—we weren’t strict about diet. He ate a lot of fried foods, sweets, and probably more processed stuff than we should’ve allowed. I can’t help but think some of that may have contributed to his bone age advancing faster than it should have. That’s been hard to sit with.
In mid-March, we came across iKids-Growth. We talked to our pediatrician, looked into it more, and decided to give it a try. Four months in, Brian has grown nearly 2.5 inches. He’s now 5'7.3 (171cm)—and more importantly, he’s regained his confidence. He feels strong again among his teammates, and I can see it in the way he moves, the way he talks, even how he carries himself.
I know some folks might say we were being too anxious. But in today’s world, height can shape so much—sports, self-esteem, even future opportunities. We just didn’t want to leave it to chance, not when we still had options on the table. If we hadn’t acted when we did, I think we’d always wonder what could’ve been. Now? We’ve still got hope. Maybe even a shot at that six-foot dream.
